Members of the Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club, 1949.🌹⭐️

The Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club was one of the earliest Black women clubs in Charleston and was founded December 5, 1916 by Jeanette Keeble Cox. The mission of the club was - “ to promote interest in literary and community work and “to lift others as they climb to higher heights.”

The clubs meetings were held by bi-monthly at the members homes and monthly dues were ten cents. Members of the club were lovers of literature and stated among their goals the promotion of self expansion by establishing a form for discussion of literary works, and contributing to the welfare of the Charleston community. At the time the club was found it was natural for it to be named after Phillis Wheatley, a former enslaved Black woman who in 18th century became the first person of African descent to publish a book of poetry in English.

Friday blessings!!

New additions to The Free Black Women’s Library, some seriously excellent gently used award winning best selling reads, both classic and contemporary.

Super Grateful for this awesome bookstack, that was delivered this morning. ♥️👌🏿📚

Last time I counted there were 2500 #books in the library but it’s probably more like 3000 at this point. Our brilliance and creativity is truly infinite.

My Rambly Reaction to the Series Finale of I May Destroy You is finally up!! I had to the video in two parts because YouTube is a hater, so here is part 1, part 2 is linked.

I am extremely proud of myself for breaking out of my comfort zone ( being on camera) and posting reactions to this brilliant (and triggering series) every week for the past 12 weeks!!

I didn’t make my goal of 1000 subscribers but that’s ok, I learned a lot in this process and I absolutely LOVED this show.

Gorgeous TFBWL throwback photos from this August 2019, when we were stationed at the lovely MOCADA House on Governors Island for a day of Black Feminist/Womanist Literary Games.

I made up clues and questions for our own version of Charades, TV/Film and Jeopardy. It was cute!!

We also traded an amazing amount of excellent books by Black women. Such an awesome fun day. ♥️📚♥️📚♥️📚

Join us tomorrow (Sunday 8/23) for our first meet up/gathering since the Covid shut down, weather predictions 82 degrees & sunny 🎉☀️🎉☀️ 🎉

We will be in Von King Park, Bed-Stuy Brooklyn from noon - 5. Masks are REQUIRED to trade books, we will also have gloves and hand sanitizer on site.

Come check out the collection and enjoy this beautiful Black August Sunday with us. ☺️☺️

All genres of good books written by Black women are accepted for trading. Register to attend via eventbrite link, see you then!! 📚♥️🌹☀️☺️🎉
