“Certainly it has been easier for women who do not experience race or class oppression to focus exclusively on gender” - Feminist Theory - From Margin to Center by bell hooks
Whaddup IG it’s been a minute since I’ve posted cause the demands of life have me busy and running, making life affirming moves, it feels good. But as a book addict and burgeoning scholar I will always make and find time to read. A lot of random conversations around this belief by some that feminism is for white women had me revisit this gem from 1984 written by the great bell hooks, it’s a scathing relentless critique on feminist theory which at this time she felt was severely lacking in conversation and space for Black women, she is direct and unapologetic in her assessment that the women’s liberation movement did not succeed as a mass movement against sexist oppression because it only addressed the needs and issues of white women, and needs to actively and consciously transform its foundation and focus so that the lives and ideas of women who exist on the margin become the focus. Women on the margin include Black women, poor women, POC women, differently abled, and any other women tackling other issues and prejudices in addition to gender. She goes in and goes off in true bell fashion and it’s delicious. 💕👏🏾📚💕👏🏾📚💕📚👏🏾
